If you have less than €5,000 a month for marketing, you can’t do everything at once. The Ads-vs-SEO debate has a practical answer once you frame it by timeline and goal rather than treating it as a rivalry.
The core trade-off
- Google Ads = speed you rent. Turn it on, get traffic today, turn it off, and it stops. Predictable and fast, but you pay for every visit, forever.
- SEO = an asset you build. It takes months to compound, but once you rank, the traffic keeps coming without paying per click. Slow to start, cheap to sustain.
Neither is “better.” Ads buy time; SEO builds equity. The question is which your business needs first.
The budget rule
Here’s the simple version we give clients under €5k/month:
If you need revenue in the next 90 days, start with Ads. If you can invest for the next 6–12 months, weight toward SEO. Most businesses should do both — but split the budget by how urgently you need results.
A practical starting split for many small businesses:
- New business / needs cash flow now: ~70% Ads, 30% SEO. Ads keep the lights on while SEO builds underneath.
- Established / can play the long game: ~40% Ads, 60% SEO. Reduce ad dependence over time.
Why doing both actually helps
They reinforce each other. Ads give you immediate keyword data — you learn which search terms convert this week, which tells your SEO team exactly what to target. Meanwhile, appearing in both the ad and the organic results builds trust and captures more of the page.
The mistake to avoid
Don’t pour a tiny budget into SEO alone and expect results next month — you’ll get impatient and quit before it compounds. And don’t rely on Ads forever without building SEO — the day you pause spending, your traffic vanishes. Under €5k/month, the danger is spreading too thin or expecting the wrong timeline from each channel.
A simple first move
Pick your single most valuable service. Run a small, tightly-targeted Ads campaign for it to prove the demand and gather keyword data. Use what converts to prioritise your first SEO pages. That way both channels feed each other from day one.
